What’s happening?

CKCA is seeking financial support from industry to help us continue lobbying and advocating on behalf of our industry. The domestic cabinet industry is experiencing an unprecedented threat and we are at a critical juncture. It’s time to pull together, speak up and act and this takes significant time, effort and resources.

CKCA is a trade association, created in 1968 to support the interests and conserve the rights of kitchen and bathroom cabinet manufacturers across Canada. Today, the industry is facing increasing threats from  offshore imports that are increasingly taking more of the domestic market away from domestic products. We are also facing significant changes due to US tariffs, and the domestic housing industry has slowed.

How has CKCA responded?

CKCA has been speaking up for industry. We have been very active in lobbying Government over the past year. First to educate them on our industry, secondly to ask them for help to ensure the survival of our industry. We are a proud member of the Canadian Wood Products Alliance, a group of manufactures and suppliers from across Canada who have worked to lobby Government using a Safeguard tool aimed at protecting an industry under threat from foreign imports. A safeguard applies provisional tariffs, but requires Government support. To date the Government has responded to the problem and applied a 25% tariff on all cabinets entering Canada with specific exceptions due to existing trade agreements (US, Mexico, Chili, Israel) as well as developing countries. But there is more work to do because CKCA does not believe that 25% is enough for the ongoing injury caused to the domestic cabinet industry. CKCA and the Alliance are pleased with the progress, but we need higher tariffs in order to slow the imports to give the domestic industry the opportunity to secure a greater percentage of the Canadian market.

Why? Because our industry employs over 25,000 and brings more than $4.7 billion in annual revenues into the Canadian economy.

In addition, CKCA has met with various Government departments and officials to advocate for:

• Zero percent tariffs on exports of cabinetry into the US by Canadian manufacturers.
• Buy Canadian procurement policies and Build Canada Homes initiatives implemented  at all government levels to give government contract preference  to Canadian cabinet shops. When government offers housing incentives these are taxpayer funded initiatives. CKCA believe that Canadian tax dollars should be spent on supporting Canadian industry, jobs, economy.
• Tariff relief, not more debt to help Canadian cabinet shops currently suffering due to the imposition of US tariffs on the cabinet industry (rates ranges from 25% under Section 232 and 50% under Section 338, with rates scheduled to increase January 1, 2027).

We need you!

Its time the entire industry spoke up and supports its trade association. We need to continue those important conversations with the right officials within Government to effect change that will ensure the continued survival of the Canadian cabinet industry. We need the support of industry to move the dial on these pressing issues.
