Ontario college cabinetmaking programs consist of hands-on courses and a generous amount of shop time. Students perfect their skills and learn both traditional and modern woodworking techniques, with shop safety and proper machine operation emphasized throughout the whole program.
Cabinetmaking programs encompass everything from planning and design to finishing and restoration. Students learn drafting and blueprint reading, and use hand tools, power tools and stationary and CNC machines to create kitchen and bathroom cabinets, furniture and architectural millwork.
There are many finishing techniques taught in these programs, such as bending, shaping and spraying, as well as restorative methods for antique pieces. Aside from these shop courses, most programs teach students basic communication and business skills, which prepare them for working at a company or branching out on their own.
